At Makloufi Language Solutions, we believe that staff development is based on the premise that teachers are our most important collaborators. Staff development is needs-specific and inquiry-based. We work closely with school districts, colleges and other adult-education programs to build on their strengths and develop solutions for schools and teachers.
Our approach is grounded in the latest ESL research and especially on the work of experts such as Jim Cummins*, who has differentiated between social and academic language acquisition. Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) are language skills needed in social situations or for day-to-day interaction with other people. Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency Skills (CALPS) are needed for formal academic learning. These include listening, speaking, reading and writing about subject-area content material.
Makloufi Language Solutions offers a range of ESL modules for educators engaged in teaching either BICS or CALPS to English language learners (ELLs) in various ESL contexts.
In a global and diverse world flooded with information, young and older adults aspiring to enroll in college have to enter with sharp skills from day one.
At Makloufi Language Solutions, we believe that college readiness is serious business and entails extensive preparation in key areas. Students must prepare for entrance tests, have a financial aid or tuition payment plan, and a personal plan for handling multiple priorities, including part-time or full-time employment, and/or child care. They must also know the basic expectations of their school of choice, and explore career paths.
